LAYOUT OF NEW BLOCKS
“INTERESTING AND
RESTFUL ” Approval of the site lay-out for th* workers’ houses to be built in Palmer’s road and Linwood avenue was given by the City Council last evening. The city architect reported that every effort had been made to produce two pleasant, restful but interesting groups of houses. The close spacing was inevitable on narrow sections, but by setting back some houses spaciousness was obtained. At Palmer’s road, an effect of enclosure and privacy would be obtained by pinching in the houses at the west end of the new street. “In the past, council housing, as at Sandilands and sundry pensioners’ cottages, has consisted of a number of identical units, or, at the most, a few variations,” said the architect. “The new schemes have five different house types, and there would be no more than four similar houses together anywhere.”
