ROYAL VISIT TO WELLINGTON

Ban On Use Of Newtown Park

REASON GIVEN AS SECURITY (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 13. The refusal of the organisers of the Royal tour to use Newtown Park, Weilington, the venue of major ana memorable children’s functions or former Royal visits, during the forthcoming Royal tour on the ground or “security,” has caused deep concern among Newtown citizens. . Two members of the Newtown Businessmen’s Association, Messrs R. S. Cameron and D. Burger, said today they had been told officially and without equivocation that a Royal visit to Newtown Park had been barred by the Commissioner of Police (Mr E. H. Compton) for security reasons. “The great beauty of ‘security reasons’ from the official point of view is that apparently for that very reason no answer need be given to our natural further inquiries on the matter,” said Mr Burger. “We also feel that if it were safe for Her Majesty to drive round the back streets of London it would be at least as safe for her to drive through Newtown,” he said.

It was difficult to know in what way conditions had changed since the last Royal visits to affect Newtown’s security, he added. The ban was a slur on the loyalty of Newtown.
