COACHING FOR YOUTHS
REPORT TO ASSOCIATION The view that the coaching of youths could be properly carried out only by the clubs, was expressed by Mr C. C. A. Barnard, when presenting the report of the youth coaching sub-committee to a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Provincial Golf Association last evening. He said he did not consider the association could do much* towards promoting the project. Mr Barnard said a club member had told him that in one college in the North Island boys were' encouraged to play golf. A six-hole course was attached to the college and as well, members of a nearby golf club called for boys on Sundays and took them round the club's course. This man considered the coaching project could go forward if a pool of clubs was established in the various colleges. “I don’t think this is to be encouraged." said Mr Barnard. With the club memberships as full as they could be. it would be difficult to get the youths into clubs and this would be a shame after the encouragement they had received. He considered it was up to the clubs to formulate some coaching plan. No action was taken. The Scargill Golf Club was elected an affiliated member of the association. “I would like to see something done to help this,” said the chairman (Mr C. E. Wroth), when a letter from the Canterbury International Air Race Council, asking for the association to sponsor a queen in its contest, was received. It was pointed out that on a previous occasion it was decided that grants from the association’s funds should not be made in such cases. The letter was received.
