WAIMATE HUNT MEETING

CHERRY PRINCE WINS STEEPLECHASE

TENTH WIN OF SEASON TO CLOUDY VIEW

Favourites fared particularly well at the Waimate Hunt Club’s annual meeting on Saturday, winning six races. A clear-cut win by Cherry Prince in the Te Waimate Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase; Cloudy View’s tenth winning run for the season in the Morven Handicap; the success of Brown Baron, owned by the president of the club (Major N. A. Rattray) in the Novice Stakes; and a fine performance by Misty Range to win the Waihao Hack Handicap, after being very slow away, were other features of the meeting. Of a total pool of £13,425, there were 1836 J 10s tickets on the winning double, Cloudy View-Low Tide, which paid £l2 Is 6d for £l. The weather was fine, but a bitterly cold wind blew throughout the day. The track was soft. There was a good attendance, and the totalisator os- - handled £15,392 10s, including £2504 10s on the double, compared with £20,880 last year.

Cherry Prince’s Win Cherry Prince was not extended in the Te Waimate Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, and he won easing up by three lengths from Military Chief, which was 20 lengths clear of the third horse, Melva. There was a gap of 30 lengths to Night Fighter, the only other runner to complete the course. Night Fighter made the early running from Melva (jumping badly) with four lengths to Cherry Prince, one length to Military Chief and Pyramus, and six lengths to Fendalton, which was pulled up with just more than one round completed. Cherry Prince jumped into the lead with one mile and a half to go, and led over the stand double for the last time by four lengths from Night Fighter, with two lengths to Military Chief, three lengths to Pyramus, and another eight lengths to Melva.

Pyramus, after a bad jump, was pulled up in the back straight. Cherry Prince led over the second last fence by five lengths from Military Chief, with Night Fighter and Melva following. Military Chief was reducing the gap to the leader when he got in close at the last fence. His rider made a good recovery, but Cherry Prince carried on to win as he liked.

Cloudy View in Form Reaching the lead at the end of two furlongs in the Morven Handicap, Cloudy View made all the running from that stage, and she was never likely to be beaten, winning by two lengths from Hunter’s Choice. Trinidad finished well for third, a similar margin away, beating The Tongs by a neck. There was one length to Mararoyal, fifth, and then a gap to Maritea, Redlo, and Finance heading the remainder. The last horse to finish was Persian Gulf.

Persian Gulf was the first to show out, but Cloudy View ran past him racing out of the straight. Cloudy View was clear of The Tongs at the half-mile, with Hunter's Choice, Trinidad, Finance. Ned Kelly, and Mararoyal following in that order. Hunter’s Choice drew up to Cloudy View on the turn, where The Tongs was also handy. Trinidad and Mararoyal, heading the remainder, were three lengths back at this stage. Cloudy View was always travelling easily In the run to the post, and she could have increased her winning margin.

The Second Leg Back in the field early, Low Tide made a forward move passing the half-mile to reach the front approaching the straight in the Redcliff Hack and Hunters’ Flat Handicap, the second leg of the double. Hard ridden, the Lo Zingaro gelding shook off a challenge from Tipperary after straightening, and won easily by three lengths. Tipperary beat Royal Kara by four lengths for second, and Cargill was two lengths further back, fourth. Manuscript was right up in line in fifth place, and Wilden. Great Art. Girleen, and Vocalise finished next In that order. Tipperary was the early leader, but Factotum and Wilden both passed her approaching the five-furlong post. Royal Kara, which had been one of the leaders up to that stage, drifted back towards the rear of the field. Factotum was a length clear of Tipperary at the half-mile, with Wilden, Girleen. and Low Tide handy, and Royal Kara improving her position. Low Tide raced around the field to be first into the straight from Royal Kara, Tipperary, Girleen. Manuscript, Cargill, and Great Art. Tipperary was ridden out in an attempt to catch Low Tide, but the latter ran on well to win easily. Misty Range’s Fine Effort

Misty Range, the slowest to move away at the start of the Waihao Hack Handicap. gave a fine performance to win. The Royal Arch mare was still well back in the field at the half-mile, but with a brilliant burst of speed, she raced around the field approaching the straight entrance to be alongside the leader. Teal, at the furlong. Maintaining her run, she carried on to win going away by three lengths. Teal beat the fast-finishing Tiles by half a length for second, and Chief Light was two lengths away in fourth place. Parsifal, Radiant Chief. Easy Way and Lady Marshall were next to finish. Easy Way made the running to the halfmile, where she was clear of Teal and Absence (in line). Lady Marshall, Chief Light, and Radiant Chief. At the straight entrance Teal had closed on Easy Way, Misty Range was showing up wide out, and Absence, Radiant Chief, and Tiles were handy. Teal reached the front at the furlong, but Misty Range finished on much too well for her. Brown Baron Succeeds Brown Baron justified his favouritism for the Novice Stakes by coming through to take the lead outside the furlong, and galloping on in good style to win by two lengths from Sun Crest. Teko. which had been first out of the barrier but had lost his position, came on again to be two lengths back in third place. There was a similar margin to Air Rose, which was followed in by Master Bobs, Private Angelo, Somatic, and Sharpist. Teko jumped out smartly, but was soon replaced by Sun Crest, which made the running from Teko, Private Angelo, Air Rose, Brown Baron, and Master Bobs. Sun Crest was four lengths clear across the top, but approaching the straight Brown Baron drew up to her. Private Angelo, Teko. and Air Rose were handiest of the remainder. Brown. Baron ran past Sun Crest after straightening, and won with a good deal In hand. Port Finis was facing the wrong way at the start, and lost all chance.

Valid Beats Hurdlers Valid scored a clear-cut win in the Studholme Hack and Hunters’ Hurdle Handicap. He was the best to begin, and after making all the running, ran away from the rest of the field to score by 12 lengths from Mandeville. Bee Line was a length and a half away, third, with three lengths to Wealthy. Black Tartan, Ironside, St. Simper, and Sir Miladieux finished next at intervals, heading the remainder.

Night Ruler was pulled up. Valid was just showing clear of Wealthy passing the stands for the first time, with Ironside. Beeline, Mandeville, Pictorial, and Black Tartan following in fairly close order. Valid jumped clear of Wealthy, which appeared to be tiring, in the back straight. At the half-mile, Valid was five lengths clear of Beeline, with a gap to Wealthy and Mandeville, and another to Black Tartan heading the remainder. Valid was well clear into the straight, and increased his margin in the run in. Hunt Cup Jumping to the front in the early stages of the Waimate Hunt Cup Steeplechase, Six Cylinder made practically all the running from that stage, and lasted to beat Mentor, which had been second throughout the running, by half a head. Penetration, well back in the early stages, finished on over a tired lot for third placing. 20 lengths away, and a length clear of Curtlssair. Debden was five lengths further back, and then there were long gaps to Taringaturi and Mystify. Shank’s Pony ran off at the second fence; Bon Chale dropped his rider at the third last fence, when in fourth place, and Flying Drake ran off at the second last fence. Results:—
