ADENAUER’S CALL TO WEST
“Human Rights In East Germany”
(Rec. 8 p.m.) BONN, June 22. The West German Chancellor (Dr. Adenauer) today sent telegrams to the heads of the three . Western Powers asking them to do all in their power to secure recognition of human rights in East Germany and to help bring about all-German unity. The three similar telegrams, which circles close to the Government described as of extraordinary importance, referred to the five-point resolution adopted by the Bundestag on June 10. The resolution called on the Government to press the Western Allies to do everything to promote the peaceful reunification of Germany. Dr. Adenauer’s telegram to Mr Eisenhower read: “The unarmed population of East Berlin and East Germany has risen against the regime of terror and force, in spite of the use of Soviet troops and tanks, and has demanded its free rights. Many have had to pay for their bravery and courage with their lives. Nothing can demonstrate better than the cry of, these tortured people how unbearable are conditions in this part of Central
Europe. “I send you an urgent appeal, in accordance with the Bundestag decision, to ask you to do everything in your power to see that these conditions are eased; that violated human rights will be restored, and that the whole of the German people will be given the peace of .unity which can alone guarantee long-term peaceful development in Europe.” Other telegrams of similar tone but different phraseology have been sent to Sir Winston Churchill and Mr Rene Mayer, the last Prime Minister to hold office in France. The telegram to Sir Winston Churchill said: “The rising of the population in East Berlin and the whole Soviet-occupied zone is a crying protest against the reigning regime of terror and force.”
