MUSICAL CRITICISM

Sir, —Having read the criticisms of choral and orchestral concerts held in Christchurch, I am left with the opinion that the honourable critic is not only biased in his judgment but most unfair in his remarks, condemning rather than offering helpful and constructive advice. A good example was the recent and unforgettable Coro-

nation concert We read so many glowing accounts of the Harmonic Society’s performance of the Bach Mass in B Minor, in this concert and previously, while our Orchestral Society, still in its infancy, gained cruel and destructive remarks. The Coronation works performed by our leading choral society received* scant recognition—poor thanks for excellent rendering of works so suitable for the occasion. In conclusion, I would suggest that in the future musical reviews show more thanks and Encouragement, with less condemnation and prejudice.—Yours, etc., J.KJ3. June 11, 1953.
