ATOMIC CANNON FOR N.A.T.O.
(Rec. 9 p.m.) PARIS. May 26. It will not be long before the United States forces in Europe are equipped with the atomic cannon of the type tested in Nevada yesterday, according to American sources in Paris, reports the United Press. They said that in spite of strong objections from some Western European officials, atomic artillery has been written into the latest defence plans drawn by the international staff of the Supreme Allied Headquarters in Europe. .The first atomic cannons might arrive in Europe before the end of 1953. Strong opposition had been voiced by some Western officials, who fear that the new weapons will supply the Soviet Union with new propaganda material in its charges that the West is preparing for an aggressive war. Nevertheless, the outgoing Supreme Commander in Europe, General Matthew Ridgway, and nis successor, General A. Gruenther. have ordered Allied officers in their command to take courses in the study of atomic Weapons.
