TAX ON PENSIONERS’ EARNINGS

Sir, —During the Labour Government’s regime, age and invalidity pensioners were permitted to subsidise their meagre pension by £1 a week as earned or unearned income, which the National Party increased to £1 10s when returned to power. The 7| per cent, tax on this allowable income was initiated by the Labour Government. This unjust “rake-off” still obtains, and has not elicited a courageous protest from any member of Parliament, which numbers some clergymen and lay preachers. I am using the soft pedal in designating this pro-rata deduction of Is 6d in the pound as “satanic.”— Yours, etc., HUMBLE HARRY. May 24, 1953.
