AMALGAMATION

Sir, —Beneath its polite phrasing the report of the Local Government Commission on the Christchurch petitions is a damning indictment of the Goverent, which for reasons “outside the knowledge” of the commission (but well known to everyone in Christchurch) failed to carry out the law regarding rhe commission’s earlier findings. This commission is one of the courts of the land and its findings are judicial decisions. Counsel for Waimairi explicitly acknowledged this during the hearing, being unconvinced, apparently, by the curious views to the contrary advanced some time ago by your correspondents, W. R. Early and “Junius.” And so the facts are established. Presumably to please its political friends the Government overruled a court and set aside both the law and the public interest.—Yours, etc., M.P. May 22, 1953.
