MOVE FOR WAGE INCREASE

PUBLIC SERVANTS TO DISCUSS ACTION

ASSOCIATION LEADERS TO MEET NEXT WEEK (New Zealand Press Association) _ WELLINGTON, May 14. The action to be taken to obtain a general wage increase would be one of the matters to be considered by the executive committee of the Public Service Association when it held a special meeting on Tuesday with the chairmen of seven of the major sections of the association, said Mr J. H. Touhy, president of the association, today. “Although over-all price increases in the last year have.been less than ta previous years,” said Mr Touhy, “they bear very heavily on the average wage-earner, particularly as the stabilisation restrictions held wages down last year while other sections of the community made considerable gains. “The stabilisation regulations have now been amended, and, whatever view the association’s executive may take about the adequacy of the amendments, it is obvious that the overriding problem is to obtain a wage increase as quickly as possible to prevent further deterioration in the general standard of living."
