OVERSEAS VISITORS TO CHRISTCHURCH
BIG NUMBER EXPECTED NEXT SUMMER
Overseas tourists are likely to tax hotel accommodation in Christchurch heavily next summer. Thomas Cook and Son, Ltd., and the Government Tourist Bureau have made many bookings for big parties from Australia, South Africa, England, and North America. "The desire of our agency is to bring tourists to the South Island, but we are often blocked by the shortage of accommodation for them,” said the Christchurch manager of Thomas Cook and Son (Mr J. F. Berkett) yesterday. The manager of a Christchurch rental car firm said he thought that the use of rental cars was in some measure providing an answer to the accommodation problem. Many people did not wish to go on a party tour, ne said. Again, if a tourist arrived in Christchurch and found the hotels fully booked, he could leave in a car immediately and see Christchurch later. If accommodation at Queenstown, for instance, was fully booked, a motorist could stay at Arrowtown. fti his experience, said the manager, many tourists came to New Zealand with no fixed itinerary in mind, and not wanting to be tied down to one. This type.of person preferred to use a car and go where he wished.
