TOLLING OF BELLS AT FUNERALS

“Lugubrious” Practice Opposed (N.Z. Press Association—Copt/rioht) LONDON, May 10. The tolling of church bells at funerals is “lugubrious” and should be abolished, the Rev. A. M. Stockwood, of Bristol, told the Lower House of the Convocation of Canterbury, when speaking on a proposed canon which stated: “In every church or chapel there shall be provided at least one bell to ring the people to service, and to toll at funerals.’’ Mr Stockwood, moving an amendment that the reference to funerals be omitted, said: “There are many other occasions on which bells are rung—when a new minister is instituted, and some might think they should be rung when he leaves—there are weddings and so forth. Why pick on funerals?” The amendment was passed.
