SOUND TRIAL FOR TIMARU CUP

ENTRANCING AND DREENAGH

EXCHEQUER BRILLIANT IN RUN OVER HURDLES

A smarf mile gallop by Entrancing and Dreenagh, two Timaru Cup candidates, and a dashing run over six hurdles "by Exchequer gave the training qt Riccarton yesterday more than ordinary interest. The outside of the course proper was open for horses with engagements at Washdyke, but those that raced at Amberley were not tested to any great extent. Dreenagh (C. McDonald) made up ground in the straight to be on terms with Entrancing (D. J. Thistoll) after running a mile on the outside of the course proper in Imin 44 4-ssec. Entrancing had a lead of a little more than a length starting the last half mile, which they completed in 52 l-ssec. Both were going freely at the finish.

It was an attractive semi-final trial for the Timaru Cup by these two wellperformed mares. Entrancing did not contest the sprint at Amberley on Saturday, but there tvas nothing wrong with her. Her connexions considered she would lack enough early brilliance to have a chance over seven furlongs.

Dreenagh has freshened up since the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, where she ran fourth in the Great Autumn Handicap and sixth in the Sockburn Handicap. She appears to have a strong chance in the Timaru Cup under 8-6. Ngapunawai (G. Lee), another Hcandidate, beat Argonaut 18. Gordon) by.three-cftiarters of a length in their mile gallop. Ngapunawai pulled hard early when there was little pace on, but showed no signs of weakening in the straight. He recorded lmin 46 l-ssec for the mile, and 51 2-ssec for the last half. Ngapunawai has failed in three starts since he won over a mile and a quarter at Nelson on April 13. That day cam £ d 8-1. He has 7-7 in the Timaru Cup, and may be one of the better light-weight prospects. thir si, ln the . high-weight rtFSVA*" ” m “ e
