WAIMAIRI COUNTY FINANCES

REPLY TO REMARK AT CITY COUNCIL Waimairi County is in a particularly sound financial position, according to the chairman of the County Council (Mr W. W. Laing). In a statement last evening concerning a remark at the City Council meeting on Monday evening that Waimairi was “bankrupt,” Mr Laing said that the county debt was under £6OOO. and rateable capital assets were in excess of £12,000,000. “I have noticed the reported remarks of a councillor (unnamed) at last evening's meeting of the Christchurch City Council that Waimairi is ‘bankrupt,’” said Mr Laing. “This was possibly intended as a flippant interjection. In case these words should be taken seriously in any quarter I wish to point out that so far from being bankrupt the county is in a particularly sound position financially.” Mr Laing said that the smooth administration' of local government was not aided by a jibe of this character, especially when the remark was made at a public meeting of a neighbouring
