CHRISTCHURCH VISIT THIS WEEK The Primate of Ireland and Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Rev. J. C. McQuaid, who attended the National Eucharistic Congress in Sydney, will arrive in Christchurch on Friday. Archbishop McQuaid attended the Congress as the representative of the Irish hierarchy. Archbishop McQuaid was consecrated in 1940 when he was only 45 years of age. He was born in County Cavan and was ordained in Dublin in 1923. After an honours degree at the National University, he studied Oriental languages and took the Licentiate in Sacred Scripture of the Biblical Commission at the Vatican. Later he took a doctorate in theology at Rome. Archbishop McQuaid returned to Ireland as dean of studies at Blackrock College. He soon became an authority on educational matters, and has for many years taken a special interest in youth and young men’s organisations. Archbishop McQuaid will be given a reception in the Civic Theatre on Friday evening. On Saturday he will be the guest of the Bishop of Christchurch (the Most. Rev. E. M. Joyce) and priests of the Christchurch Diocese at lunch. During his stay in Christchurch he will be the guest of Bishop Joyce.
