(N2. Press Association—Copyright; ACCRA (West Africa). May 10. One European police officer, one constable and eight rioters were shot dead today during rioting at Elmina, 134 miles west of Accra. A 35-year-old police superintendent. Major Edgar Brookes, was one of those killed A large crowd protesting at a local tax gathered at Elmina Castle, where the police reserve is quartered, Major Brookes and a police sergeant asked the crowd to disperse. The crowd ignored him, and Major Brookes moved towards them. He was shot dead as he wm talking. Another policeman was killed, and a third seriously wounded in the subsequent shooting. Eight rioters were killed. The police later dispersed with tear gas another crowd protesting at the tax at Elmina.
