VOLCANO ERUPTS IN LAKE
(NZI. Press Atsociation—Copyright) CANBERRA, May 11. The Minister of Territories (Mr Paul Hasluck) has announced that he has received advice of a volcanic eruption at Lake Wisdon, on Long Island, .about 100 miles west of Madang, in New Guinea. No casualties have been reported among the island’s native population of 377. but the District Commissioner is evacuating women and children and aged men to Saidor, about 45 miles to the south-west of New Guinea.
The eruption began on Saturday afternoon, is continuous, and a crater is forming. The lake in which the volcano is erupting is about seven miles wide in parts.
