CANTERBURY TEAM SELECTED The following players have been selected to represent Canterbury in the New Zealand inter-provincial match for the Freyberg rose bowl, to be played at Shirley on May 21 to 23: B. W. Cleland, I. B. Cromb, N. M. Fowke, E. G. Kerr, M. W. Stanley, and C. J. Ward. The emergency is L. A. Watson. Sixteen players were invited by the Canterbury Provincial Golf Association to play in an open tournament over 36 holes at Shirley yesterday. The following scores were returned; B. W. COTTON WINS TOURNAMENT
FIVE-STROKE MARGIN OVER DAI REES (N.Z.P.A.—Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, May 8. Henry Cotton made a tremendous burst over the last nine holes to win the Dunlop Two Thousand Guineas golf tournament. His final round of 74, 1 under par, gave him an aggregate of 353 for the 90 holes. Dai Rees gained second prize money with an aggregate of 358. Sharing third place on 360 were Bobby Locke, Flory van Donck, Max Faulkner, Jimmy Adams, and T. Haliburton. Leading scores (fourth and fifth rounds and total) were: H. Cotton, 72, 74—353; D. Rees, 70, 73—358; Bobby Locke, 77, 72—360; F. van Donck, 69, 68—360; M. Faulkner, 69, 73—360; J. Adams. 76, 74—360; T. Haliburton, 69, 75—360; E. Brown, 73, 75—361; J. Panton, 65, 72—361; R. Two events, a bogey handicap, in three grades, and a greensome Stableford handicap, wCre played in an open tournament conducted by the Christchurch Club, yesterday. R.S.A. AND TRAVELLERS DRAW MATCH
A match between the Canterbury branch of the Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association and the Christchurch Returned Servicemen's Association. played at Templeton yesterday, was drawn. A cup was presented by Mr L. J. Taylor for competition between the two organisations in 1934, but the cup has not been competed for since 1943. The following are the results, with returned servicemen's names mentioned first:— T. S. Condliffe and G. C. Catto beat E. H. Buckeridge and L. A. Stevens; P. H. N. Freeth and J. L. Blair halved with R. Rhodes and A. E. Thomas: P. Hobson and H. S. Williams beat J. Jacobs and J. L. Myhre; D. W. Russell and F. J. Collins lost to M. Mumane and F. Busch; A. A. Grimmer and C. Malndonald lost to C. Evans and R. T. Dowker; G- Russell and G. Miller lost to G. H. Christie and M. Melkle; G. H. Humphries and R. S. Pearson beat D. Knight and G. M. Drabble.
