COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL

OFFICIAL OPENING ON SATURDAY Nearly 4000 entries have been received for the Christchurch Competitions Society’s forty-second annual festival, which opened on Saturday. This is about the same number as last year. Opening the festival the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) congratulated the society on its cultural and educational work over a number of years. This year several innovations have been introduced. They include radio vocal solos for men and women and a quiz session between six primary and six secondary schools, as well as impromptu and prepared speaking. During the festival six halls will be used. Instrumental and vocal sections will be decided at Begg's Concert Chamber, elocution at Trinity Hall, and dancing at the Repertory Theatre. The Scottish Hall, Station 3YA, and the Civic Theatre are the other buildings to be used. The judges are as follows:—elocution, Mr J. R. Lester (Christchurch); songs, Mr D. Munro (Wellington); instrumental and assistant vocal, Mr L. C. M. Saunders (Auckland); fancy dancing, Mr R. Wilkin (Wellington); national dancing, Mrs J. Williams (Dunsandel). Mrs A. Drummond is the official accompanist and Miss J. Barnard, assistant accompanist. In the following results, competitors are from Christchurch unless otherwse stated: — Tap Dance (Flint Cup).—Miss Elaine Carol Turner, 75 points, 1; Rhondda Webb. 73, 2.
