LOCAL POLLS IN BRITAIN
Labour Party’s Big Gains LONDON, May 8. Counts tonight confirmed the strong Labour gains in Britain’s local government elections. Tji hour controls 352 councils—l 6 more than before the election—and controls almost all of Britain’s major cities. There are nearly 200 results yet to come, but they are unlikely to alter the over-all picture. Labour followed up its country-wide victory by winning 19 of London’s 28 boroughs. Britain’s councils and boroughs aggregate nearly 1860. . • —, Labour made a net gam of 354 seats in 8000 individual contests. The Conservatives lost 241 Seats, the Independents 102, the Liberals 4, and the Communists 7. Labour also controls Manchester, Leeds, and Nottingham. Six London boroughs are now all Labour. Labour also unseated all six Communists from their last London stronghold in Stepney. Even in fashionable .Kensington, a traditional Conservative ' preserve, Labour made six gains. The Labour successes jolted the Conservatives, hitherto confident of their party gaining public favour.
