GIRL GUIDES’ FESTIVAL
OPENING CEREMONY IN WELLINGTON "The Press" Spaeiat Service m , WELLINGTON, May 10. Tbe Wellington Town Hall was packed last evening when 2000 girl guides from all over the Dominion attended the opening of a festival to mark the thirtieth year of the guide movement Members of the public helped to swell the audience. .A programme of folk dancing and singing was given after the official • speakers were Miss Ruth Herrick, Dominion Girl Guide Commissioner, and Mrs H. B. Turbott, Wellington Provincial Commissioner. m-A bandcraft exhibition will open in the Town Hall tomorrow afternoon. The Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie) will officially open the exhibition. On Tuesday morning the guides’ Coronation gifts of a jig-saw puzzle painted by Miss Jane Orford, of Christchurch. and a book on New Zealand flora and fauna will be handed to the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr K. J. Holy--2? ke) t* l ?. ste P s of Parliament House. The gifts will be sent to Prince Charles and Princess Anne. A pageant of guiding will be a feature of each evening's entertainment during the guides’ festival, which will end on Thursday. Miss Orford, who ls . Dominion Brownie Commissioner, will be commentator, and the pageant will be presented by Mrs Gerald Wilson. of Wainukurau
On Thursday, the Dominion Court of Honour will be held, presided over by Miss Herrick and attended by the Dominion leaders of the movement.
