TRAINING COLLEGE BEATS SYDENHAM The youthful Training College team was too quick and accurate for the more seasoned Sydenham team at Williamson Park on Saturday, when the third round of the Canterbury Hockey Association's competitions was played in perfect conditions. In a hard-fought game, Woolston beat University, 4-3. Technical was fully extended to gain a one-goal margin over Harewood, but Selwyn beat West Old Boys, 4-0, and Trinity beat Old Boys, 5-3. . Following are the points gained by the senior teams: Training College 3, Selwyn 2j, Technical 2, Trinity 2, Woolston 2, Sydenham 14, Old Boys 1, University 1, Harewood 1, West Old Boys 0.

TRAINING COLLEGE V. SYDENHAM Sound defence by D. Plumb, in goal, and M. Rendle , combined with quick recoveries and sure trapping, enabled Training College to beat the more experienced but slower Sydenham team by a margin of one goal. A player in his first real season as goalkeeper, D. Plumb promises to be outstanding in a year or two. He repeatedly earned applause for brilliant stopping and clearing, and the only goal that beat him was a brilliant shot by Speedy. At right back M. Rendle is safe and consistent, but a habit of going well up may get him into trouble with a fast set of forwards. The halves. B. Eagle, B. Davie, and M. Gibson, tackled and trapped cleverly and Save the forwards plenty of the ball. B. Green led the forwards, who played with sound combination and put plenty of dash into circle play. Green, at centre, and McGregor were the pick of a youthful line that should go far if they keep together. Sydenham did not combine as it should ana had but a shadow of the brilliance of a few years ago. The players appeared slow in comparison with their opponents. Recoveries, trapping, and passing were slower in all departments. The forwards lacked a leader in the centre and seldom fot the ball smoothly from the halves. . Cummins, on the right, made a few promising runs, but his centres were blocked or missed. Goals were scared for Training College by Green (2) and McGregor, and fta Sydenham by Speedy and Cumberpatch from a penalty bully. Umpires: Messrs K. Hamilton and B. W. Rogers.

WOOLSTON v. UNIVERSITY In a fast, open game between Woolston and University, the defence of the two goalkeepers was brilliant. Time and again Goldsmith saved the University goal, and Johannsen did yeoman service in Woolston’s goal. The game provided thrill after thrill as Hobson and Cotton led the University forwards in many raids, and time and again brilliant work by C. V. Walter, who went to right back, sent play back to Woolston’s end. University had several new players in the forwards, and there was mqre individualism than isusual with a more experienced side. W. H. Slater, who plays only occasionally, possesses a good turn of speed but is too individualistic. D. S. Adcock, at centre, who is inclined to play the ball too far away, had few chances, as the Woolston halves were fast on the defence. The halves. J. Mann, E. D. Bennett, and E. Archer, are sound, but the Woolston forwards gave them little room to work and they were bustled off their usual game. The Woolston forwards are fast, but could combine better: they are inclined to pair off. N. Hobson and P. Cotton work well together, but R. Moir, at left wing, is more of a solo player. T. Crossen is Soung and has much to learn, but he will nprove. The two backs, L. Hobson and J. Abrams, and' the goalkeeper are the strength of Woolston’s defence. Goals were scored for Woolston by P. (totton, N. Hobson, and R. Moir, and for University by Adcock, Mann, and Armstrong. The final score was: Woolston 4, University 3. Umpires: Messrs -W. Grammer and B. W. Rogers. TECHNICAL V. HAREWOOD

A slight change in the forwards did not unduly handicap Technical, and it secured a one-goal victory over Harewood. At half-time, the score was 1-all. Emerson is setling down as goalkeeper for Technical, and allowed only one goal through. Elliott was the sounder of the backs. The halves gave their best exhibition this season, and Len Lloyd again proved outstanding. Les Lloyd lent ample support, and Kissell also shone well in the tight play. Their passes upfield were exceptionally well placed. The forwards showed plenty of dash and ball control. Crotty and Burrows were prominent in many solo efforts, and with Dale to round oft the movements, they made a formidable line. For Harewood, Reagan in goal was in fine form, and countered a number of hard shots. Reese and Pauli, the backs, have played better, and the brunt of the attack fell on Robson, at centre, and Greenwood, who is a very useful half. Green, the other wing, did most of the attack, and his consistent short passes to the forwards deserved better treatment. Clements, who scored Harewood’s only goal, was brilliant at times, and Currie and Wallan showed superb positional play, but their work in the circle lacked finish. Kearns made a few sideline dashes, most of which were quickly broken up by Lloyd. Newton, the right winger, was frequently so well marked that his chances of gaining ground were remote. Territorially, Technical had the advantage, and by frequent changes in attack found Harewood out of position. The scorers for Technical were Dale and Crotty, and for Harewood, Clements. Umpires: Messrs J. Hartigan and A. Ostler.

TRINITY v. OLD BOYS Trinity’s forceful methods and speed aided by ability to win the three penalty bullies awarded, gave it a 5-3 win over Old Boys. The game was a contrast in styles, with Old Boys endeavouring to play constructively against a side which put more snap into its passes and more punch into both attack and defence. M. Haywood, centre-half for Trinity, has shown a return to form, and he gave good passes and intercepted well. W. Beecroft is developing into a sound right wing, and most of the best attacks came from his flank. H. Robinson, by winning three penalty bullies in a row, won .the game for his side after it had been trail”Bld Boys were unlucky in losing W. Dockery early in the second spell, but the rearranged forward line went well, with N. Thomas in good form on the right and I. D. Armstrong sound in circle play. P. Hanna again showed what an improved half he is, trapping and passing neatly. Trinity scored the first goal with a clean shot from a penalty corner hit by H. Allen, and C. Dickie scored from scrambling circle play. Old Boys had

evened by half-time with a goal by Armstrong and Thomas's centre, and another by R. P. Rogers from a back-pass. They went ahead early in the second spell when Thomas sent one back from the line and Armstrong punched the ball in. Then the series of penalty bullies let Trinity into the lead, and, though Old Boys tried hard. Trinity closed up the game and let nothing past. Umpires: Messrs K. Wright and F. Iggo. SELWYN 4 V. WEST OLD BOYS 0 Although Selwyn won by 4 goals to 0, West Old Boys held it for the greater part of the game, with K. Mortimer showing splendid form in goal. J. Reece showed himself a splendid leader for the Selwyn forwards. K. Elliott played soundly in the West Old Boys backs, and N. Herron was in good form in Selwyn’s forwards. There was no score in the first half. Reece opened Selwyn’s account with a penalty bully goal, and three more goals came in quick succession. Herron moved in quickly to score from a free hit, and another came from a penalty bully. W. Hocking scored the fourth. Umpires: Messrs L. C. Thomas and N. E. Hocking.
