SIGN OF THE KIWI
Sir,—We have heard nothing for some time about the plan to restore the Sign of the Kiwi. Some of those loudest in their demands for the City Council to spend £lO,OOO of the city ratepayers’ money on a public amenity, not in the city, but in a neighbouring county, were themselves not residents of the city. Some fnonths ago we were told through your columns that the appeal committee was “in touch” with the Heathcote and Waimairi County Councils and the Riccarton Borough Council, but that to the then date there had been no “touch.” May I inquire what sums were finally decided upon by these local bodies as their appropriate contributions to a public amenity that would be used by their ratepayers and city ratepayers alike?—Yours, etc., CITIZEN.
May 9, 1953. [“None of the local bodies mentioned has so far contributed anything towards the appeal, but in the case of all three, the matter of their making a contribution was held over until this year’s estimates,” said the chairman of the Kiwi Restoration Committee (Mr H. P. Smith), when this letter was referred to him.]
