FRIDAY (Before Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M.) RESISTED ARREST The police had to be protected in 1 the execution of their duty, and he was tossing up whether o r not to send the accused to gaol, said the Magistrate, when Arthur Cook, aged 26, a labourer and seaman, appeared on a charge of resisting arrest. Cook was fined £6; and on a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner while drunk he was fined £2. Senior-Sergeant C. A. G. Mcßae said Constable J. J. W. Jenkins had heard crockery being broken on the Christchurch Railway Station shortly before the departure of the boat train on May 7. Constable Jenkins found that the accused was responsible and asked him what he was going to do about it. The accused replied: "Nothing.” The constable then arrested the accused, said Senior-Sergeant Mcßae. Cook resisted violently, and appealed to the people an the platform to get him away from.the police, offering two £lO notes to anyone who would help him. BORSTAL ESCAPEES SENTENCED
Donald Keith Henderson, aged 18, a truck driver, and Ronald George Walter Olsson, aged 19. a labourer, appeared for sentence on six charges of conversion, theft, and breaking and entering. Each was sentenced to three one-year terms of detention in a Borstal institution, to be concurrent with the sentences they were serving at the time of their escape from the Invercargill Borstal on April 20. The Magistrate warned Henderson that he was heading for a long life in gaol. Olsson, he said, had not gone quite so far, but he was heading the same way. Henderson and Olsson will appear in Invercargill next Thursday on charges that at Invercargill on April 20 they were deemed to be Incorrigible rogues in that they escaped from lawful custody at the Invercargill Borstal Institution.
INTOXICATED IN CHARGE ' Thomas Michael Joseph Dwyer, aged 33, a labourer (Mr H. S. Thomas), was fined £l5 on a charge of being intoxicated while In charge of a motor-truck on Ferry road on May 1. His driving licence was cancelled and he was prohibited from obtaining another for three years, and then only on application to. a Magistrate. On a second charge, of committing a breach of a prohibition order, he was fined £2. Dwyer pleaded guilty to both charges. FAILURE TO PAY TAXI FARE William Henfy Emerson, aged 61, a shepherd, was fined £3 on a charge of hiring a taxi at Christchurch on May 7 and falling to pay the fare of £3 17s 6d on completion of the hiring. He was also fined 20s on a charge of being found drunk in a public place. REMANDED William Joseph Fuller, aged 19, a farm hand (Mr W. G. P. Cunlngham), was remanded for one week on a charge of stealing a watch, valued at £5, the property of Bevis Reith Blow, on May 6. Ball was allowed In accused’s own recognisance of £lO and one surety of £2O. On a charge of falling to pay maintenance Maurice John Hunter, aged 35, a carpenter, was remanded until May 15 to enable further inquiries to be made by the police. Bail was allowed In accused's own recognisance of £5O and one surety of £lOO, Hunter to report daily to the police. Richard Joseph McLean, aged 55, a retired farmer, was remanded until May 15 on a charge of being intoxicated on May 7 while In charge of a motor-car on the Christchurch-Leeston State highway. Bal! was renewed.
Wflllam Ross, aged 36, a painter (Mr B. J. Drake), was remanded until NHy 13 on a charge of being intoxicated while In charge of a motor-car on Papanul road on May 7. Ball was renewed. TRAFFIC OFFENCES Offenders against the traffic regulations were penalised as follows on prosecutions brought by Senior-Sergeant Mcßae for the police:— Failing to give way: Robin Shlrer Blsley, fined 20s; Sidney James Evans, £2 (failing to report accident, costs only; no warrant of fitness, 10s); Morris McClintock, £2 (no warrant of fitness, 10s); Alton Campbell Ross, £2; Russell Frederick Sharplln, 30s; William John Thompson, 30s. Driving without due care and attention: Joseph Richard Gaskin, fined £2 (no drier’s licence, 10s; no warrant of fitness, 10s). Crossing intersection against traffic lights: George Leonard Crosby, fined 20s. . Permitting the operation of an unlicensed motor-cycle: Norman Raye O’Connor, fined 10s. No warrant of fitness: Robert Arthur Haymes, fined 10s; Catherine Watson, 15s.
