BUILDING FOR UNIVERSITY
VICE-CHANCELLOR TO MEET MINISTER INSPECTION OF FIRE DAMAGE Dr. G. A. Currie, Vice-Chancellor of the University of New Zealand and chairman of the University Grants Committee, will interview the Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie) soon about the possibility of accelerating university building generally. In Christchurch yesterday, Dr.-Cur-rie said one of the most urgent jobs was the restoration of the old Boys’ High School building at Canterbury University College, which was gutted by fire in February. He had made inquiries during the morning so that he could better appreciate the disorganisation caused through the transfer of departments to temporary quarters, and assure the Minister that the best use of space would be made in replanning.
Dr. Currie said he had inspected the damaged block, had full discussions with the building committee, and studied with the architect (Mr Alan Manson) the estimates for restoration.
