WOMEN CONVERT CAR
REMANDED FOR SENTENCE (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 9. Two women who converted a car were convicted in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court today, and remanded for sentence. Iris Elaine Hawkins, alias Susan Elaina Hanson, aged 20, a waitress. and Eileen Rayna Broughton, aged 17, a domestic, were jointly charged and pleaded guilty. They were remanded in custody till April 16 by Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M. Broughton also admitted driving without a licence and was convicted and discharged. Charged last week as Hanson, Hawkins admitted her true name from the dock. Today, SeniorDetective J. B. Finlay withdrew charges preferred against her under that name and substituted charges in her true name. The age of 19 which Broughton had earlier given was amended to her true age, 17. Detective Finlay said the car was taken on April 1, and later a police patrol car recognised it. It was stopped after a chase in Quay street. The women were accompanied in the car by three sailors. The car owner had met Hawkins at a dance and she had gone to live with him, said Detective Finlay. Later Hawkins met Broughton at a dance and she joined them at the house. In the owner’s absence they were doing the housework when they found the keys and took the car. Hawkins had six previous convictions—one for escape from a Borstal institution. Broughton, with a record in the Children’s Court, was under the supervision of the Child W'elfare Department. The Magistrate said both girls needed “some sort of corrective treatment.’* - - - ,
