SOVIET LONG-RANGE SUBMARINES
NO KNOWLEDGE IN N.Z. OF REPORTED EXERCISES (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 9. The New Zealand defence authorities have no knowledge of Russian submarines operating on exercises in the New Zealand defence area, which includes some of the Pacific islands including Fiji. The Minister of Defence (Mr T. L. Macdonald) said this todav. It was recently suggested in London that long-range Russian submarines were exercising in various parts of the world, particularly along the Allied supply lines. The London report named areas in the world where the submarines were believed to be, and said they were near groups of Pacific islands.
