FOUR SHOPS BROKEN INTO
ATTEMPT TO BLOW OPEN FACTORY STRONGROOM When the occupiers of four shops in the same block in Opawa road opened for business yesterday morning they found that the shops had been broken into during the night and goods and money, of a total of more than £2OO. had been stolen. Nylon stockings, which may be worth up to £lOO, and all the money in the till were stolen from Mrs F. Saville’s Opawa Drapery at 1308 Opawa road. Entry was gained by forcing the back door. Mr J. R. Williams’s grocery shop at 130 Opawa road was also entered, and tobacco, cigarettes, and a ham, of a total value of £l5. were stolen. Three cameras, cosmetics, small articles and £6 in silver were stolen from the shop of Mr R. C. Polson, chemist, at 132 C Opawa road. t The thieves robbed the gas meter in the shop of the fishmonger at 1328 Opawa road, proceeds being £1 12s. An unsuccessful attempt was made to break into a. service station at the corner of Shakespeare and Wilsons roads, Opawa. An attempt was made to blow open the strongroom door in the premises of Amalgamated Batteries, Lid., in Garlands road, but the explosion only made the door more firmly locked. Residents in the area said that they heard the noise of an explosion about 10.30 p.m. on Wednesday.
