SYDNEY RACING SENSATION
Positive Swabs From Randwick Winners (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 8. A sensation was caused in turf circles today when it was disclosed that swabs taken from Tarien, the Doncaster Handicap winner at Randwick on Saturday, and the Sires’ Produce Stakes winner. Cromis, had proved positive. It was assessed that the TarienCarioca Sydney Cup double cost bookmakers about £500,000.
The chief stipendiary steward, Mr J. Donohue, and Tarien’s trainer, T. J. Smith, refused to comment when interviewed at Randwick racecourse today, but Tarien’s part-owner, Mr R. O. Cummings, said Smith had been notified that a swab from Tarien was positive.
Cromis is raced by the vice-chair-man of the Victorian Racing Club (Mr E. A. Underwood) in partnership with his sister-in-law, Mrs J. W. Underwood. Mr Underwood said he was amazed and most distressed at the swab report. He said his trainer. R. Sinclair, had taken every reasonable precaution since bringing Cromis to Sydney. In Sydney, Cromis had been stabled at Maurice McCarten’s stables. Tarien was to have started in the All-Aged Stakes and Cromis in the Champagne Stakes today. Both horses were taken to Randwick racecourse, but were scratched there.
