NEW ATTACKS BY ENEMY

Attempts To Seize Strategic Heights (Rec. 11 p.m.) SEOUL, April 8. The Communists attacked United Nations outposts all along the Korean battlefront today in what Allied officers said they believed was an attempt to seize strategic positions before any armistice line was drawn across the peninsula. The Communists threw three assaults against Bunker Hill in the heaviest action, but were beaten back. Belgian troops repulsed an attack by nearly 200 Chinese after withdrawing from their outposts north-west of Kumwha on the central front. The assault was launched with heavy machine-gun and rifle Are on a small outpost. The Belgian troops -withdrew’ to their mainline positions a few minutes before the Chinese attacked. On the eastern front the Communists seized one outpost hill from South Korean troops and they also attacked positions on the western front. The Chinese still hold Old Baldy, on the western front, the gateway to Seoul, which they seized on March 24. The Chinese launched the assault from two directions. Heavy fighting followed for about half an hour before the Communists broke contact. The Belgian troops killed about 20 Chinese and wounded 45.

A Belgian patrol later reoccupied the outpost without meeting opposition.
