SUICIDES AT OXFORD
VICE CHANCELLOR TO SEEK CAUSE (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, March 11. The Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University (Sir Maurice Bowra) has suggested medical research on a wide basis to determine the causes of undergraduate suicides at Oxford. “The whole problem disturbs me and I feel that in Oxford we have doctors capable of going into this tragic question,” he said. “Somehow 1 believe we shall find the answer.” Recently the undergraduate weekly, “Cherwell” criticised the university’s attitude towards the provision of adequate psycho analytic guidance for undergraduates after the death, through gas poisoning, of a student in his college bedroom. A report covering the years 1947 to 1949, published by the student health service of the University Institute of Social Medicine, said that of 35 undergraduate deaths in this period at Oxford. 17 were caused by accidents, and dine.’ including vacation deaths, were suicides. The report said the suicide rate in Oxford was higher than that for the civil population of the same age and that of the army.
