CORONATION FASHIONS

BRITISH DISPLAY IN SWITZERLAND

Coronation fashions by Britain s leading dress designers have been shown before an international gathering at St. Moritz, Switzerland. On an ice rink circled with snow, eight British models displayed exclusive creations by 11 couturiers, including Norman Hartnell, the Queen’s dressmaker, Victor Stiebel, who designs most Princess Margaret’s clothes, Lachsfsse, and Michael Sherard. Evening dresses with jewels embroidered on satin or tulle were specially featured. The fabrics shown included some recently viewed by the Queen in London—laces, satins, reversible tweed coatings, reversible cashmere coatings and very fine doeskin. To display these fabrics, the mannequins draped lengths of cloth around themselves. A number of wholesale designers were also represented, and about 50 “off the peg” coats, suits, and dresses, as well as sports and beach wear, were shown. The show was the first British fashiorf display ever to be held in Switzerland It was organised by a United Kingdom export magazine, “Ambassador,” and had as its object the promotion of increased sales of British fashions —particularly fabrics — in Europe. The organisers have already reported a large volume of inquiries and orders as a result of the show.
