N.Z. RED CROSS SOCIETY
MERIVALE SUB-CENTRE Mr A. E. Kincaid, chairman of the North Canterbury Centre of the Red Cross Society, outlined the new constitution of the society and its application to sub-centres, when he spoke at the annual meeting of the society’s Merivale sub-centre this week. Mrs J. G. L. Vernon presided in the absence of the president (Mrs M. B. Warren). The annual report said that a bring-and-buy stall had been conducted at each monthly meeting; 102 new garments had been made and sent to the centre; hospitals had been visited and parcels distributed to disabled service-* men. Members had also assisted the Good Neighbour scheme, helped with street appeals, and collected £79 12s 5d for flood relief in Britain and Holland.
The following donations were made during the year:—assessment £3O, Red Cross Day £lO, work stall £22 14s, Good Neighbour scheme £lO, headquarters building fund £5, disabled soldiers’ parcels £2 10s, and gifts for patients in Burwood Hospital 15s. Mrs W. S. Mac Gibbon was thanked for the use of her home during the last two years for meetings. It was announced that future meetings would be held at the home of Mrs M. B. Warren.
After the business session, Mr Cox, welfare officer for the St. Saviour’s Guild, outlined the work of the guild in Christchurch. Officers were elected as follows: president, Mrs M. B. Warren; vicepresidents, eight were elected; honorary secretary. Miss V. Youngman; honorary treasurer. Miss M. Ferguson; committee. Mesdames C. M. Ollivier, H. S. Murchison, E. J. Cordner, V. Holm Turnbull, C. H. Seymour, Ynyr Robinson, C. Cooper, F. Hiatt, Harold Wright, Peter Ma.ling, Guy Beadel, F. G. Bristed, and M. G. Smyth, Misses N. Enright. P. Boyle, and H. Biss.
PAPANUI SUB-CENTRE
Mrs F. E. Burrell presided at the annual meeting of the Papanui subcentre of the Red Cross Society. The annual report stated that members had visited several hospitals, assisted with the good neighbour scheme, and collected clothes and knitted garments for sending overseas. The sum of £76 12s Bd, the result of a collection and donations, had been handed in for flood relief in Great Britain and Holland. The speakers were Lady Wigram and Mrs J. G. L. Vernon. Officers were elected as follows: president. Mrs F. E. Burrell; vicepresidents, Mesdames M. E. Orchard, E. E. Egglestone and G. E. Bailey; secretary. Mrs M. A.Stedman; committee, Mesdames Angus, Buckland, Dickson, Dutton. Lea. Leithhead. Plows, Tillman Tod, Misses Black, Heywood, Hodgson, and Manhire.
