OPERATIONS IN AUCKLAND HOTEL BAR (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 10. Keshav Bhana, aged 38, a gardener, was sentenced in the Magistrate’s Court today to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour for bookmaking in the public bar of an Auckland hotel last Saturday. He pleaded guilty to the charge. The police said Bhana had several previous convictions, for bookmaking. Mr W. S. Spence, S.M., said that bookmaking must be discouraged. “Of all its forms, that carried on in hotels is probably the greatest nuisance of all.” said the Magistrate.
