SCHOOLS MAY CLOSE FOR TWO DAYS

DEPARTMENT’S DECISION AWAITED Although the Education Department had not yet given a lead on the arrangements for the celebration of the Coronation in June, he expected that schools would close on the Monday and Tuesday of Coronation week, said the chairman of the Canterbury Education Board (Mr S. J. Irwin) at a meeting of the board yesterday. He expected some outline of the department’s arrangements soon. The occasion was somewhat different from the pageant which took place during the Centennial celebrations, and there was nothing which would warrant the pupils of all the schools being assembled in the city streets, he said. He had attended a meeting with the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.), and businessmen, and there had been a move to arrange a procession with bands and floats, Mr Irwin said. “The Mayor said then that the children would not be able to play a very big part.

“As far as I am aware there is nothing done yet. and it rests with the department to give us a lead,” he said.
