BAND FESTIVAL
Sir, I congratulate your correspondent on his report of the band festival at Lancaster Park last Sunday. The B grade test selection, “Hungarian Knapsody, I consider a poor choice, rne contest will be held in the open air at Cook’s Gardens, Wanganui, and some of the bands will be penalised j£. a , wind should be blowing, as the thinly-scored part of “Lassan” will not be fully heard by the judge, who will be in a caravan. A judge can only credit for what he can hear and this is definitely not a work for outside playing. May I correct your correspondent regarding this being the first contest at which the Woolston Band has not been conducted by Mr Estall? In 1951, Mr Norm Goffin conducted the band when one of the test selections was “Rhapsody for Brass,” composed by his brother, Mr Dean Goffin.—Yours, etc., t. , G.L. February 16, 1953.
