AUCKLAND HAS TO FOLLOW ON

CRICKET

Two Down For 141 In Second Innings GOOD BOWLING BY MACGIBBON (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 19. Auckland is still struggling for runs after the third day of play in the Plunket Shield cricket match* against Canterbury. At stumps on Saturday, Auckland had lost four wickets for 120 runs in reply to Canterbury’s total of 392. The remaining Auckland batsmen added only 60 runs today. Forced to follow on, and being 212 runs in arrears, Auckland did much better in its second innings, but the home batsmen had to fight hard all the way, after losing the first wicket for two runs. K. F. Dwyer and W. M. Wallace were associated in a very solid partnership which yielded 136 runs in 198 minutes. At stumps, Auckland had lost two wickets for 141. The gate takings amounted to £l2B, making the total for the three days £690.

Auckland’s stocks slumped quickly in the first few minutes of play this morning, when G. O. Rabone. the captain, failed to add to his total of 37. A good ball from J. A. Hayes took his leg stump. Previously, B. J. Postles was struck on his left elbow by a rising delivery from A. R. MacGibbon and had to retire for 34 minutes.

The Auckland batsmen were again uncomfortable facing the bowling of Mac Gibbon and Hayes,, and H. E. Tapping scored only three before being bowled by Mac Gibbon. Auckland had then lost six wickets for 129, and was in desperate straits. E. C. Petrie and Postles then added 42 for the seventh wicket in 69 minutes. Petrie was dismissed at 16, after a most patient and almost purely defensive innings.

It took Postles 20 minutes to open his account, but after-he settled down, he played some nice shots, and looked comfortable until a sudden change came over the scene. J. G. Leggat, the Canterbury captain, gave Hayes and Mac Gibbon the new ball at 139. Hayes, however, could not strike his accurate length, and after two overs, which cost 15 runs, he was replaced by M. B. Poore.

The ’’owler dismissed Postles and W. E. Bell in his first over. Auckland had then lost three wickets without any addition to the score.

D. B. Clarke and W. J. Brown held out for 10 minutes before lunch. Two minutes Sufficed after the resumption for Brown to be run out, and Auckland was all out for 180 in 312 minutes. The bowing honours for Canterbury deservedly fell to Mac Gibbon, who took another two wickets and ended with the fine figures of four wickets for 47 off 23 overs, five of which were maidens. Another disastrous start was made by Auckland, when Mac Gibbon repeated his effort of dismissing J. H. WorraU in his first over.

KF. Dwyer and W. M. Wallace then set themselves for a dour, determined stand. Wallace, in attempting io hook a rising delivery from Mac Gibbon, played the ball on to his wicket. Much credit was due to Dwyer, the colt, who played so stubbornly for 225 minutes in making 38 not out. He was lucky to be dropped behind the wickets at 33. Promoted in the batting list, Clarke, with Dwyer, held the fort for the last 20 minutes. Mac Gibbon again came through -With the bowling honours tor Canterbury by taking two wickets lor 23 in 11 overa. Scores:— _ _ , CANTERBURY First Innings ~ ~ 392
