ANTARCTIC WHALING

SIXTEEN FLOATING EXPEDITIONS

(Rec.‘ 7 p.m.) LONDON, January 19. Sixteen floating expeditions and three shore stations with 12,000 men are taking part in the Antarctic whaling season which has just opened, says Reuter’s Oslo correspondent. Norway has sent seven floating expeditions against 10 last winter, Britain three, Japan two. South Africa, Holland. Panama and Russia one each. The shore stations are British, Norwegian. and Argentinian. The total target limited by an international agreement is 16,000 “blue whale units”—about 30,000 whales—representing 350,000 tons of oil.
