FIGHTING IN INDO-CHINA
HEAVY CASUALTIES AMONG FRENCH
(Rec. 9 p.m.) SAIGON, January 19. The French announced today that Vietminh rebels on Saturday inflicted heavy casualties to several companies of a strong French reconnaissance column north of An Khe in IndoChina. The French Union column withdrew to its starting point of An Khe.
A French spokesman said the French Army had already rushed sufficient reinforcements to An Khe, which was wrested from communist-led rebels in June, 1946.
An Khe is an important stronghold in South Annam’s mountainous jungle country. It guards the eastern approaches to the rich tea and coffee producing provinces. Strong Vietminh forces equipped with heavy weapons began their thrust north of An Khe last Tuesday.
