ACCIDENTS
CHILD DROWNED IN RIVER (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, November 12. A five-year-old boy was drowned in the Patea river, about 40 yards upstream from the main highway bridge at Patea, this afternoon. He was: Errol August, a son of Mr and Mrs R. August, of Devon street, Patea. After more than two hours’ dragging no trace of the body had been found tonight. The tragedy occurred while the boy was playing with a lad of about the same age. Wi Korowhiti, on the steep bank of the river. It is believed that the boy was riding a tricycle near the river. Wheel marks were found in the sand near the water’s edge. Nearby is a whirlpool. CAR STRUCK BY TRAIN WOMAN MOTORIST INJURED (New Zealand Press Association) GREYMOUTH, November 12. Miss Dorothy Blair, assistant-secre-tary to the Greymouth Harbour Board, was injured this afternoon when a small car of which she was the sole occupant was struck by a goods train on a level crossing less than 100 yards from the entrance to the Greymouth Public Hospital. The car was wrecked. Miss Blair was admitted to the hospital, which later issued the following report: ‘‘Condition satisfactory, injuries not yet ascertained.” MOTOR-CYCLIST INJURED (New Zealand Press Association) MASTERTON. November 12. A motor-cyclist, Mervyn Lehmstedt, aged 19. of Mauriceville West, received head injuries and cuts to the chin and throat when his machine and a motor-car were involved in a collision outside the Mauriceville railwav station about 4 p.m. yesterday. He broke the side window of the car with his head and was thrown !ome distance on to the road. He did not regain consciousness until late last night.
His condition at the Masterton Hos* pital is satisfactory.
