LIQUOR BALLOT PAPER
Presbyterians Suggest Alterations ATTITUDE TO LICENSING TRUSTS 1 (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, November 12. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church decided in New Plymouth today to urge the Government to amend the liquor ballot paper to a two-issue ballot paper on continuation or prohibition, and a special referendum on trust control.
The assembly, after discussing licensing trusts, agreed “that no licence is preferable to any form of licence, as liquor has the same effect, however obtained; that trusts offer the next best choice, and are preferable to private control; that there is a need for some provision to allow a vote on existing private areas regarding the forming of trusts; and that there should be some provision for a vote on the trust after a reasonable period of operation.”
The assembly also recommended to Presbyterians the adoption and practice of personal abstinence as the best method of removing the evils of intemperance, but. it said, Christian liberty of conscience was frankly recognised.
