SHOW AND RACE TRAFFIC

' SPECIAL CONTROL ARRANGEMENTS

APPEAL TO MOTORISTS FOR CO-OPERATION

Traffic during the November carnival period so far had been reasonably well behaved, but there had been several breaches of the law which could easily have been avoided, said the Traffic Superintendent of the Christchurch City Council (Mr G. P. Kellar) yesterday. Special arrangements had been made to assist all road-users, and the traffic control programme for the approaches to the Show Grounds and Addington trotting course should be observed.

It had been noticed that many motorists had stopped their cars in no-park-ing areas, both in the city and on parts of Lincoln road. Mr Kellar said. This habit could create considerable congestion, even if only three cars were parked in such areas. “I appeal to motorists to be a little considerate, and not to leave their cars in prohibited areas, even for a minute,” Mr Kellar said. “Our officers have no alternative but to place a traffic offence notice on the offending car. They do not wish to do so unless it is absolutely necessary. In any case, this does not relieve the congestion at the time.” Traffic Breaches Noted The traffic on Tuesday had been reasonably well behaved, but several motorists had attempted to filter back to Lincoln road from the back route to the Addington trotting course. The extra distance covered by using the back route was about half a mile. Another point was that quite a number of motorists waited in restricted areas to pick up friends at the end of the day, Mr Kellar said. It was most important that the prohibited areas should be kept clear. It was possible that some of the offenders were visitors to Christchurch and were not familar with traffic arrangements. The traffic arrangements which apply today and tomorrow to the routes to the Show Grounds and Addington trotting course provide that motorists approaching from the northern areas will go by way of Fitzgerald and Moorhouse avenues. Those aoproaching from the southern areas along Lincoln road must turn left at Wright’s road. For the general public, there is no private car entrance to the Show Grounds from Lincoln road.

Members’ exhibitors’ and trades vehicles will be the only ones to use the Lincoln road entrance to the Show Grounds. No private cars will be allowed on Lincoln road, between Moorhouse avenue and Nairn street, from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.. and from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m tomorrow. Trades vehicles will not be allowed to make deliveries during these hours Buses and taxis will not be allowed to enter Twigger street from Lincoln road. Instead, thev must use Lindores street, the next street to the south. Public transport vehicles will be the only ones using Lincoln road.
