MINOR EVENTS AT RICCARTON

IRWELL HANDICAP TO TALLAROOK

Tallarook, an odds-on favourite, finished ] too strongly for the Trentham filly Incomparable to win the Irwell Handicap decisively at Riccarton yesterday. The Riccarton colt Kingship weakened into third place two lengths away. Kingship began smartly from No. 14 and led out of the chute by a length from Sawdust, Incomparable, Tallarook, Overboard, Imposition, and Referee (wide out), which were practically in line ahead of Highwayman, Somatic, and Prince Colorado. Incomparable ran past Kingship joining the course proper and she led to the furlong, where Tallarook was making up ground in the middle of the track just behind Kingship and ahead of Imposition, Balfour, Sawdust, and Referee. Tallarook responded well inside the furlong and won going away by a length and a quarter from The weakening Kingship beat Balfour by a length for third. Balfour’s stablemate. Imposition, was a fair fifth, and was followed by Sawdust. High Hope, and Overboard. Kerry swung round at the start and took no part in the race. High-weight to Pageant Pageant and Riga had a hard struggle from the furlong in the Port Cooper High-weight Handicap, Pageant finisning a shade better to beat the Wingatui horse by half a length. Pageant trailed Morse Code from the mile to the half-mile, had a slight lead on the home turn, and ran the race out gamely under a hard ride from B. J. Langford. Riga, having his first race at the meeting, was on Pageant’s quarters from the half-mile to the home turn. He ran his usual sound race, but Pageant was a shade too good for him. Ryeland showed an improvement on his run in the corresponding race on the first day to finish third, a length and a half behind Riga. He was just behind Riga at the half-mile, but his finishing run was not solid enough to carry him up to the first two. Mightgo, the high-weight winner on the first day, faded under his weight over the last two furlongs, finishing fourth two lengths behind Ryeland., Bright Robin was beaten off in fifth place. Success For Regal Regal, the beaten favourite in the Spring Plate last Saturday, decisively won the Apprentices’ Handicap, giving T. J. Smith, son of the Sun King filly’s trainer, his first winning ride. Regal was in or near the front all the way. She was tjie leader at the five furlongs, was practically alongside King’s Honour from the half-mile to the home turn and was clear at the furlong. She ran the race out strongly to win by a length and a half from Lord’s, which beat Ulster Queen by half a length. Lord’s started wide out but J. W. McDonald soon had him in the leading bunch. He followed King’s Honour, Regal, and Hermes into the straight and led the chase after Regal from the furlong. Ulster Queen improved her position steadily to the home turn, where she was sixth. She battled on well for her placing three lengths clear of Gone Away, which finished well. Gone Away was just in front of Hermes, Defame, and the weakening King’s Honour. Count Defaulter, the favourite, could not hold his position early in the race, and he steadily drifted to finish twelfth. Golden Orb took no part in the race, and Weewyn, Okaruru, Jesse James. Dry Bread, Ideal Robe, and Finir began slowly. Dormant’s Strong Challenge Dormant was a surprise win favourite for the Stonyhurst Handicap, but that confidence was not misplaced. The Hastingstrained Underwood gelding finished brilliantly over the last furlong to win by a neck going away from the Riccarton filly. Pleasure Bent. Fo’s’sle finished well for third, three-quarters of a length back, and half a length clear of the New Zealand Derby winner. Programme, which did not have a good run. Major Neptune led at the start, but Adversary then took over and led past the seven furlongs from Pink Gazelle. Royal Purple, Major Neptune. Ballast, Dormant, Programme, and Gold Scheme. Pink Gazelle ran to the front inside the next two furlongs and led past the halfmile from Royal Purple, Compactum, Adversary, Dormant, Programme, Pleasure Bent, and Fo’c’sle. Pink Gazelle dropped out before the home turn, where Royal Purple and Gold Scheme were in front with Compactum. Programme, Major Neptune, Pleasure Bent, and Dormant following. Pleasure Bent dashed through on the inner to take charge inside the furlong, but Dormant brilliantly closed the gap to her and won by a neck going away. Fo’c’sle beat Programme by half a length for third. The weakening Gold Scheme was three lengths back, fifth, and then there was a length to Major Neptune. Adversary was next. Margundi’s Win Margundi, the runner-up in the highweight on Saturday, finished strongly from the middle of the field for a clear- , cut win in the Ashlev Handicap. The Ric-carton-trained Red Mars gelding won by two lengths from Purple Sage. The lightly-supported Royal Simper was a 1 length and a half back, third, just lasting to beat the faster-finishing West Riding, the favourite, by a nose. Sarada led past the mile from Roanne, • Ra, Swing High, Sheik, Admiral’s Keep, Gay Fenian. Margundi, and Paper Royal. Sarada led past the six furlongs by half a length from Ra. with Swing High and • Roanne trailing ahead of Gay Fenian, Sheik, Margundi, Admiral’s Keep, Paper Royal, Royal Simper, and Sir Miladieux. Sarada, Ra, and Swing High were practically in line turning for home ahead of' Sheik, Gay Fenian, and Roanne, with Royal Simper and Purple Sage becoming prominent. Sheik reached the front momentarily ! outside the furlong, but he was soon mastered by Purnle Sage. Then Margundi ; challenged, and he ran past the Southland ; mare with ease.

Royal Simper was a length and a half back, third, just shading West Riding, which made her run from the tail of the field. Margaret Leigh made up ground for fifth, ahead of the weakening Sheik and Roanne.
