CANTERBURY CUP TO MY HERO

RACING

Grand Boy Decisively Wins Handicap

COALTOWN AND TALLAROOK SUCCESSFUL My Hero gamely held off a bold challenge from Valescure to win the Canterbury Cup on the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s spring meeting at Riccarton yesterday. It was a well-deserved win for the Christchurch-owned and Riccarton five-year-old, his first since he won the Islington Handicap at the Grand National meeting last year and only the fourth of his career. Third in the New Zealand Cup on Saturday, My Hero has won £8165 in stakes for Mr O. F. Watson, for whom he is trained by J. E. Shaw.

Valescure, the runner-up in the New Zealand Derby on Saturday, appeared to have My Hero’s measure just inside the furlong, but the older horse responded gamely under a hard ride to beat him by threequarters of a length. Master Neptune, another Riccarton-trained three-year-old, was third four lengths behind Valescure.

The race lost some of its interest with the withdrawal of the New Zealand Derby winner, Programme. Mr W. S. Goosman’s Balloch colt was kept for the Stonyhurst Handicap, in which he finished fourth after an interrupted run. Valescure’s performance in the Canterbury Cup suggested that Programme might have won that race.

Grand Boy, which could not be brought through to Riccarton for New Zealand Cup day because of flooding in South Canterbury, finished brilliantly to beat Notable and Gardez in the Fendalton Handicap, the first leg of the double. This was only his third race in open company, and his record in that class is now a win, a second, and a fourth.

Grand Boy, a five-year-old brother to the Dunedin Guineas winner, Chowder, was bred and is owned and trained by Mr A. M. A. Englebrecht. The Siegfried five-year-old will probably be taken north next month to race at the Auckland Cup meeting. Coaltown, the smart Hastingstrained miler, embellished a consistent record with a narrow but convincing win in the Jockey Club Handicap, the second leg of the double and one of the most thrilling races at the meeting. Coaltown’s strong late challenge from the middle oi the field carried him past Social News in the last few strides. There were 447| tickets (127 on-course) on the Grand Boy-Coaltown combination, which paid £ll7 8s for Coaltown is trained by B. H. Morris and owned by Mr H. M. Glazebrook, 11 ? J u 2?°. se colour s the smart two-year-old Tallarook won the Irwell Handicap earlier on the programme. Tallar°o« is also trained by Morris. The club had better luck with the weather for its programme, the day being fine and sunny. The track dried out steadily during the day umes becoming progressively better and finishes closer. The on-c° ur se totalisator turnover waa £91,795 10s, including £7632 on Jb e ’ compared with £100,505 on the corresponding day last year.

My Hero had something in reserve to cope with that challenge, and he ran the race out gamely to beat the three-year-old by three-quarters of a length. s l er e Ptune was unchallenged for third four lengths back, and a length and a han m front of Lekas. Royal Tan was three lengths back fifth, and then there of two lengths to the weakening Hutton.

Notable, which cast a plate in the New Zealand Cup in which she finished fifth, was back in the middle of the field after two furlongs, and she still had nine horse? m front of her going to the half-mile, br.e worked her way forward to be fifth on the home turn, and her chance looked bright when she mastered Dissenter. Gardez was fifth starting the last halfmile and he challenged gamely in the straight, but Notable just held him for second.

Biassed did well to finish fourth. He was buried in the big field at the halfmile, and was still well back from the leaders on the home turn.

Argonaut, which was just behind the winner at the half-mile, finished solidly for fifth, close behind Biassed. Ash was hve lengths back sixth, and was followed home by Indian Scholar. Noble Prince, the favourite, was slow away but rushed through to follow the pace-making Ash from the mile to the three furlongs. He was beaten on the home turn, and was eighteenth to finish. Brilliant Late Challenge Coaltown finished brilliantly from the middle of the field to catch Social News just short of the post and win the Jockey Club Handicap by a neck going away. There was great merit in Coaltown’s effort. He dwelt slightly at the start and was some distance from the leaders on the home turn.

Sports Post led over the first furlong, and then Entrancing moved through to take jcparge, Sports Post moving into th? trailing position with Social News, Declare, Snuffbox, The Hob, and Pierre following ahead of Coaltown.

Royal Mail, w'hich had been slow away from the outside of the, field, moved through fast to lead past the five furlongs from Gold Tip, Pierre, Snuffbox, Social News, Sports Post, Entrancing, Hunter’s Choice, Pierre, and The Hob. Royal Mail led round the home turn from Snuffbox, Hunter’s Choice, and Declare, with Travesty fast improving his position wider out. The field bunched at the furlong, where there was little between Travesty, Bosky, Hunter’s Choice, and Royal Mail, with Social News forcing her way through on the inner. Social News appeared to have the race won 50 yards from the post, but the fast-finish-ing Coaltown beat her narrowly but well. Bosky was a length back third, beating Hunter’s Choice by half a head. Snuffbox was close up fifth just ahead of Declare, Royal Mail, Travesty, Pierre, and The Hob. Results:— PORT COOPER HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, Of £5OO. One mile and a half. 2. I—Mrs A. L. BROUGHTON FOUND SPORTS POST HARD TO STEER

Sports Post was trying to climb the rails at the five furlongs in the- Jockey Club Handicap at Riccarton yesterday, and his rider, W- J- Broughton, had difficulty in steering, him. This was reported by the stipendiary steward, Mr C. F. Hartland. Sports Post did not meet with any interference from any other horse, Mr Hartland reported.

Entrancing was squeezed for room in the same race. Her rider, D. J. Thistoll, said that Entrancing needed plenty of room in which to gallop, and would not do her best from then on.

Passing the six furlongs in the Stonyhurst Handicap. Major Neptune, which was pulling hard, went back on to Programme. Then Ballast shifted ground slightly and also slightly checked Programme.

J. R. Shaw, trainer of Hermes, was cautioned by the chairman of the judicial committee for having faulty reins. The reins broke when Hermes was doing his preliminary for the Apprentices’ Handicap.
