WATERSIDERS AT AUCKLAND

REDUCTION IN WORKING STRENGTH SOUGHT (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 11. The Cargo Workers’ Union decided at a stop-work meeting today to press for a further reduction in the working strength of the port, because of the continuing shortage of work on the Auckland waterfront. Last month it was decided to recommend to the Port Conciliation Committee that no more men be admitted to the bureau register—then about 1700 strong—until the - numbers had fallen to 1650. This figure has now been reached, but last month men available for work were still being sent home. An average of 115 men were paid the daily attendance money of 10s on each working day in Octobei’.’ On some days of exceptional slackness, as many as 300 men were unemployed, apart from the usual quota of unionists on holiday, sick and injury leave, and normal absentees. The daily average working strength of 1252 was an improvement on the September figure of 1031.
