SOUTH AFRICAN CRICKETERS
State Team 307 For Seven
(Rec. 11.15 p.m.) ADELAIDE, Oct. 31. The medium-fast South African bowler, E. Fuller, playing his first game in Australia, caused an early slump in South Australia’s first innings when the four-day match began today on a patchily grassed wicket in bright sunshine. Phil Ridings won the toss from the South African captain. Jack Cheatham, and South Australia batted. Fuller, swinging the new ball, soon tore a hole in the innings, dismissing the openers. N. Dansie and Haddrick, in a hostile burst in three overs at the cost of four runs. The other opening bowler, M. G. Melle, was a bit erratic, and neither fast nor venomous, but he had a cold. L. Duldig and the test batsman, G. Hole, rescued the innings with a spirited third wicket stand for 67. Hole’s sparkling ,40 included six fours and took one’ hour. Hole, who batted with vigour and artistry, went out leg before wicket to an indiscreet shot, trying to sweep a faster ball from the off-spin bowler. H. Tavfleld, to leg. * At lunch, South Australia had lost three wickets for 93. Tayfield was still turning the ball quite a bit after lunch, although the wicket was settling down. Duldig’s solid 47 included five fours, in 106 minutes. Tayfield caught Duldig off a hot return in his sixth successive maiden over. Just when the South Africans seemed to be getting on top, the veteran, Ridings, and the 19-year-old Trowse, came to the rescue with a resourceful fifth wicket stand, adding 89 in 97 minutes before Ridings was bowled by Melle. The score was then five wickets for 201. Ridings’ 64, the top score so far, was brightened by five fours and took 138 minutes. Trowse, with his crisp shots and footwork, batted impressively and pluckily. The South African fielding was brilliant and the bowling persistent. South Australia, after a weak start—they lost four wickets for 112—recovered, and at the last of play were in a strong position against South Africa with 307 for seven wickets. The wicket was fairly lively at times, and may become worse when the South Africans bat. Tayfield took four wickets for 89 in 29 overs. At one stage he bowled seven maidens in a row. Langley hit hard, and with Trowse put on 73 in 44 minutes’for the sixth wicket. Scores were:— SOUTH AUSTRALIA First Innings N. Dansie, c Norton, b Fuller .. 4 Haddrick, b Fuller .. 6 L.
