CENSORSHIP IN EGYPT

Wide Power Given Minister

(Rec. 8 p.m.) CAIRO, October 21. The Prime Minister (General Naguib) today gave the responsible Ministers t’le power to place any local newspapers under censorship, if it was deemed necessary to safeguard Egypt’s integrity. The order also authorises the Minister to censor a newspaper’s outgoing and incoming cablegrams. Last week the Army rounded up a number of persons charged with “participating in a spy ring and jeopardising the integrity of the State.” Among them were employees of the Societe Orientale de Publicite, which publishes three local foreign language newspapers. Dispatches of foreign correspondents are subject to censorship.
