RAILWAYMEN’S WAGES
Agreement Reported With Department HIGHER RATES PROPOSED Agreement is reported to have been reaened between tne Railways Department and the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants on the issue 01 the sample survey, conducted by the Labour Department, of ruling wage rates -paid in outside industries. According to reports, the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants has established that railway rates are entitled to be increased by 3d an hour for those on or above tradesmen’s rates, and by 2{d an hour for those below tradesmen’s rates. t , An argument has now to be faced on the issue of an additional Id an hour all round for “goodwill’’ or “the nature of railway work," which was first granted to the workers at the end of the 1350 strike. The additional Id an hour is a question for the Government, and railwaymen believe that negotiations for its granting, above the other wage increases, may be protracted. Under the new rates, some of the hourly wages will be: locomotive engine drivers, with maximum of 22 years’ service. 6s Ojd; first year 5s 4jd: firemen, with maximum of 15 years’ service, 5s 2Jd; first-year, 4s 91; electrician maintainers, 6s Ojd; leading tradesmen on maintenance, 5s lOld; labourers on maintenance commencing, 4s 7d; workshops and depots tradesmen, minimum, 5s 4Jd; skilled labourers, 4s 83d; labourers, commencing, 4s 7d.
