ROAMING DOGS

Sir,—l was glad to read in this morning’s issue of “The Press” “Hydatids’s” letter about roaming dogs. If an owner cannot keep his dog under control in an enclosed yard or run, and only let it out on the street when with its owner, he should not have one. But definitely not on a chain, except at night. The City Council is responsible for keeping strays off the streets and, I understand, allows the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals £5OO per annum to look after this matter. The City Council also gives its permission for this society to have a street-day collection every year, when the public willingly give donations to assist pay expenses and therefore expect' something in return. There is little danger of hydatids among well-kept town dogs.—Yours, etc., x DOG OWNER. October 22, 1952.
