FLOOR COVERINGS FOR SCHOOLS

MR ALGIE REPLIES « TO REQUEST The Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie) believes that a proposal that schoolroom floors should be covered with linoleum or other suitable materials is a good one, but says that the money at his disposal is “at present exhausted by the necessity of providing extra schoolrooms for the unprecedented rise in the school population.” This information was contained in a letter from the Minister, received by tl\e Canterbury School Committees’ Association at a meeting last evening. The association, at a previous meeting had supported a resolution from the Christchurch Primary School Headmasters’ Association, asking for the provision of floor coverings for schools. “I do not think that the Education Department can be compared with any other Government department when it comes to the question of comparative floor space under* its control ” said the Minister in his letter “However, I shall be pleased to discuss this matter with my departmental officers with a view to seeing to what extent it would be practicable to meet your suggestion.” ■ The letter was received.
